Gujarat Titans are expected to finish as the toppers when we look at the ranking of all 10 teams based on their playoff probabilities for IPL 2023.

IPL 2023 is currently in its third week and the teams are slowly getting into the rhythm by getting their game and team composition right. Although we have only seen 3-4 games per team so far, we don’t have a single team that hasn’t lost a game yet.

This is great news for the fans as all of the teams are fairly evenly matched with the occasional rift with their strengths and weaknesses. To overcome the weakness, the Impact player rule has somewhat ensured that teams have a strong combination of 13 players each game with a few additional reserves to be used as needed.
After seeing the best combination of 15-16 players from each team in their first 3-4 matches in IPL 2023, why not analyze each team based on their team combination and rank each of the 10 teams based on their chances of playoffs? It may not be perfect, but it’s certainly a useful and unbiased analysis to come to a top 4 conclusion.
To find out the ranking of each of the 10 teams based on their playoff chances for IPL 2023, we find the cumulative rankings of their top 15 players. Players are ranked relatively for their last three IPLs and domestic/international form. While the relative ratings are calculated based on the benchmark players in the respective categories like openers, pacers, spinners etc.
Importantly, 15 players are selected, taking into account their best first choice who plays 11 and the other 4 in reserve. Four players can have multiple combinations based on team structure. But generally we need at least 3 spinners, at least 5 pacers, at least 2 wicketkeepers and a total of 5 foreign players in our squad. This way we will be able to choose a combination of the 15 best players per team.

Okay, so let’s take a look at the ranking of all 10 teams based on their playoff chances for IPL 2023.
First choice match for MI: Ishan Kishan [wk], Rohit Sharma [c], Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Tim David, Jofra Archer, Piyush Chawla, Kumar Kartikeya, Jason Behrendorff & Mohd. Arshad Khan. Other backups: Riley Meredith, Hrithik Shokeen, Vishnu Vinod [wk] and Nehal Wadhera
At number 10 we have Mumbai Indians and if not the analysis, the points table would describe their performance. The team is full of youth with as many as 6 players in the squad of 15. Moreover, Mumbai Indians bowling is their weakest part and if they don’t chase, MI would have it’ n difficult to defend the games.

Like MI, Kolkata Knight Riders are full of youth including their captain Nitish Rana. Andre Russell is still their best player, but he doesn’t bowl because of the Impact player rule and comes to bat at 6 or less. While KKR have won two matches thanks to great heroics, they are far from competent compared to other teams. However, they have a strong bowling line-up which can help them stay in the tournament.

Number 8 sees Delhi Capitals and the points table is a reflection of their performance. Rishabh Pant’s void seems too big for Delhi to fill with three departments including the captaincy. Although Delhi have a good line-up, the failure of Prithvi Shaw and the middle order is causing them concern.

In the 7th position we have the kings of Punjab who have a strong team but they are missing in two places. The team is not very strong in the middle order and their reserves are not very strong either. However, their score of 8.036 is not bad and it is only a few games. The return of Kagis Rababda and Liam Livingstone should boost the team’s confidence in the upcoming games.
First choice match for CSK: Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni [c&wk], Shivam Dube, Deepak Chahar, M Theekshana & Tushar Deshpande. Other Reserves: Ajinkya Rahane, Rajvardan Hangargekar, Subhranshu Senapati and Dwaine Pretorius
It might surprise you to see Chennai Super Kings in 6th place, but to tell the truth, the bowling pace is the big disappointment for CSK. Their key player is Deepak Chahar, who is currently ruled out with an injury. We rely too much on inexperienced pacers like Tushar, Hangargekar and Magala. If CSK did not do well with their spinners at home, it would be difficult for them to enter the Playoffs.

Number 5 sees Sunrisers Hyderabad and they have a good squad including reserves. In fact, they are one of the only two teams apart from GT that have good reserve players. But what they need is IPL experience. All their overseas players have played only a few seasons of IPL. So while they have potential, the team would need enough confidence to sail through.
First choice match for LSG: KL Rahul [c], Quinton de Kock [wk], Deepak Hooda, Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stonis, Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi, Mark Wood, Amit Mishra and Avesh Khan. Other reserves: Mohsin Khan, Krishnappa Gowtham, Kyle Mayers and Manan Vohra
Lucknow Super Giants have a strong XI in place and the presence of the Impact players only strengthens it. LSG have all the makings to finish in the top 4. They have exceptional batting and bowling firepower. If KL Rahul recovers from his job and Mohsin recovers from injury soon, they will be the team to beat in the tournament.

Number 3 sees Rajasthan Royals and they are the only team with a consistent first pick in the 11 games. We would hardly see them changing their playing 11. Moreover, they have a good reserve to rely on whenever needed. With the form Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal are in, expect them to finish in the top 4 again.
First Choice Match for RCB: Faf du Plessis [c], Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik [wk], Shahbaz Ahmed, Harshal Patel, Wanindu Hasaranga, Josh Hazlewood, Mohammed Siraj and Karn Sharma. Other reserves: Michael Bracewell, Akash Deep, Anuj Rawat and Suyash Prabhudessai
In second place we have Royal Challengers Bangalore and that should come as no surprise. On paper, they have one of the strongest playing XI and even though RCB might have lost 2 games, they fought well till the end. With the return of Josh Hazlewood and Waninda Hasaranga, expect RCB to come back stronger in the upcoming matches.

Finally, the best team on paper that is featured in every department is Gujarat Titans. Gujarat may not have an exceptional team, but they have a solid playing XI, including 4 strong reserves. The strange thing about GT is that they have a new winner in almost every game. Under the capable leadership of Hardik Pandya and Ashish Nehru, expect GT to finish in the top 2 again.
So that’s about the match chances of all 10 teams for IPL 2023. RCB, GT, LSG and RR look best to make playoffs. But don’t underestimate the power of CSK and the element of surprise in the form of SRH. Personally, GT, LSG, RCB and CSK seem to be the best to qualify for the IPL 2023 playoffs.
