Most Fans In Ipl Team – Ask observers to name the most popular cricket league in the world and almost everyone, including its critics, will say the Indian Premier League. Ask about the most popular team in the IPL and you’re likely to get different answers.
Let’s look at the main factors that contribute to the team’s popularity. Some of these are: the team’s performance, the size of its home market, and its marketing and advertising power. None of these factors is sufficient by itself, nor is the absence of any indication that the team will be unpopular.

“A surprise win is not always important for popularity,” Jasal Shah, head of Velocity MR, which published the IPL consumer report last year, told Cricket Monthly. “If you see some teams, especially Royal Challengers Bangalore, they lose regularly but still they are near the top of the popularity charts. Other teams have won the IPL but they are not as popular.”
Which Ipl Team Has Most Fans Online?
A franchise’s location obviously determines the size of its market, giving underground teams a huge advantage. “Punjab and Rajasthan will always be small advertising markets and will always struggle to get higher sponsorship deals compared to the big four teams [Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore, which are also capitals of big countries],” Indranil Das Blah, founder of Kwan Entertainment , says the 2018 IPL Report by multinational consultancy Duff & Phelps.

Duff & Phelps estimates that franchises spend somewhere between 5% and 15% of their revenue on marketing and promotion. Obviously, some teams were better at this than others. “CSK is investing in every aspect of the brand,” Brand Strategist Harish Bijor told Cricket Monthly. “They have a great name; they have MS Dhoni who is a brand icon for them; the ‘whistle podu’ campaign was great and they took the brand deep into tamil nadu. He built the brand from the bottom up, which is not easy.”
Then there are more popularity factors that are specific to India. “What’s important about India, which is unique, is a sort of celebrity perspective,” N Santosh, partner at Duff & Phelps India, told Cricket Monthly. “Celebrity involvement makes the team attractive to the fan base and helps retain them, whether it’s Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta or Shilpa Shetty.” Obviously, the bigger the star, the bigger the impact, although this stardom has power also has the other side: if the popularity of the star declines, the popularity of the team may also decline.
Which Is The Most Popular Ipl Team?
Another factor is the presence of an Indian star like Sachin Tendulkar or Dhoni. Chris Gayle or AB de Villiers may have cachet, but they are still considered international players. This is different from other major leagues. Frenchman Eric Cantona was the face of Manchester United in the early years of the English Premier League, and Egyptian Mo Salah is Liverpool’s most popular player today. “If Virat [Kohli] moves to Rajasthan Royals, there will be a change in loyalties,” says Shah.
To answer our question, we’ll look at TV ratings (and more recently, streaming numbers), brand ratings, social media monitoring, and anecdotal information about sponsorships and advertising. For our purposes, the 12 seasons of the IPL naturally lend themselves to review in two blocks of four years each, followed by two blocks of two years each (Super Kings and Royals were discontinued for the 2016 and 2017 editions).
TV rating is a rough measure of popularity, but it gives a relative idea of interest in each team. They are also the only metric we have for the first four years (access to the data was restricted due to the blockade) and by this measure Kolkata Knight Riders and Royals were the two most popular teams.
The Knight Riders had the highest Television Rating (TVR) in three of those four years, while the Royals topped the 2009 IPL in South Africa, according to data provided by TAM Media Research. (TVR is a time-weighted figure that takes into account time spent watching and ratings.) The Knight Riders had Eden Gardens, Sourav Ganguly and Shah Rukh, and the Royals had Shane Warne, a charismatic cricketer with a Bollywood touch and actual Bollywood fame in the form of co-owner Shilpe Shetty, who bought a stake in the team in 2009. Also, the Royals were underrated, winning in their first year.

The Knight Riders were the only team to have an average TVR higher than the overall league average rating in each of the four years.
“They were the first team to be profitable based on the information we have,” says Santosh. “It is because of Shah Rukh. He is a branding guru. He promoted the team better than anyone else and made it a top three team even before the IPL started. They also have a monopoly in the East Indies and a large stadium in Eden Gardens. For these reasons, they took advantage.”
Knight Riders continue to be arguably the most popular team in the league, even after Ganguly’s release. In 2013 and 2015, they were the most watched team according to TAM, and they began to perform as well on the field as they did off it. Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, they won the title in 2012 and 2014.
Mumbai Indians topped the IPL 2012 while Kings XI Punjab led by Virender Sehwag and Glenn Maxwell, both strikers, led the viewership in the 2014 edition when the team reached the final.

The Super Kings reached three finals in that period and it was clear that they had made a masterstroke when they picked Dhoni as their captain in 2008. At that time, Dhoni was a huge national star and became inseparable from the franchise even though he was not local. However, despite two titles and four finals in their first eight years, the Super Kings were not the most watched team in any of those seasons.
It was Mumbai that challenged Knight Riders’ popularity. Rohit Sharma stepped in for Tendulkar, not with the same fan adoration but with more success on the field. They alternated the title with Knight Riders who won in 2013 and 2015.
At the end of the first eight IPLs, the Knight Riders had the highest brand value in the league at $86 million, according to Duff & Phelps, followed by Mumbai at $72 million and the Super Kings at $67 million.
While the Super Kings and Royals served two-year bans for their role in the spot-fixing scandal, Mumbai and Royal Challengers rose to the top of the ratings chart, displacing the Knight Riders.
Ipl 2023: Most Popular Ipl Team On Social Media
According to data provided by Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC), Mumbai averaged 18.5 million impressions per league match in 2016, just ahead of Royal Challengers with 18.3 million, while Knight Riders did 16. 5 million. (Impressions are the number of individuals in the target audience who watched the “event,” averaged in minutes; BARC figures do not include viewers of the elimination bouts.)
The rise of the Royal Challengers was largely fueled by Kohli, who by then had been Test captain for over a year and had established himself as one of the best batsmen in the world. And he dated a Bollywood star. It made him must-watch TV and was the most talked about actor on Facebook in 2016, according to a Duff & Phelps report. Royal Challengers also reached their third final that year, where they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Winning the title did little to boost the Sunrisers’ popularity: the team attracted the fewest viewers per match, with 14.8 million viewers, the same as last-placed Kings XI.
In 2017, Mumbai won the title for the third time and were once again the most watched team. The Royal Challengers went to the cellar, winning just three games and finishing last. However, their fans remained loyal: they had the second-highest viewership on television, and their brand value jumped 31% year-over-year to $88 million.
Sridhar Ramanujam, a resident of Bangalore and head of consultancy Brand-Comm, told Cricket Monthly that the people of Bangalore are proud of their city. “Even when the game wasn’t important and the team was seventh or eighth, the game would be sold out. The legacy of cricket here is strong. A lot of RCB fans also play league cricket and may have played with some of the boys in the team.”

According to Duff & Phelps, 2017 was also a year of increased social media activity around the IPL. Knight Riders lead here with a combined 19 million followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, well ahead of Mumbai and Super Kings.
The broadcast rights were transferred from Sony to Star Sports, which suddenly launched the IPL in multiple channels and in multiple languages. It has also attracted millions of viewers on Hotstar, its digital platform.
In a fairytale return to the league, the Super Kings won the IPL 2018.
