But what about looking at the most runs scored by Indian players in each year of the IPL? This will help us better connect with Indian players, and will only bring the right comparison. So, let’s have a look at the list of most runs by Indian players in each year of IPL from 2008 to 2023.
For easy understanding of users, we will only measure the number of runs scored by Indian players every year. Therefore, we will have only one income per year. For example, KL Rahul scored 659 runs in IPL 2018, but he is not in this list because Rishabh Pant with 684 runs has been selected this year.
At number 16, we have Suresh Raina from the 2009 season. Raina has scored one hundred runs short of Gautam Gambhir’s 534 runs in 2008, but he has probably taken to tougher wickets in Africa. Although Suresh struggled against swing, he did well in 2009 scoring 434 runs at a decent average of 31, but a good strike rate of 140.9.
Number 15 sees Gautam Gambhir score 498 runs in the 2017 IPL. It was Gauti’s last year in the IPL, and he did not disappoint. Gauti was the second highest wicket-taker this year after Warner’s 641 runs. He scored 498 runs from 16 innings at an average of 41.5, with four 50+ scores to his name.

At number 14, we also have Gautam Gambhir, who was India’s best player in the first edition of IPL in 2008. Gambhir was 99 runs ahead of India’s second best, Yusuf Pathan. In total, Gambhir hit 5 fifties that year, shared with Orange Cap winner Shaun Marsh.
The year is 2015, and we have a new entrant in the run-getter category with Ajinkya Rahane of Rajasthan Royals. The current version of 2023 may be the best of them all, but Rahane came into the limelight with his brilliant performance for RR in 2015.
2011 for Virat Kohli, who scored 557 runs in that season; 4 more than his idol, Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli had scored just 307 runs in 2010 before hitting the big score in 2011 with 557 runs at an impressive average of 46.4. Kohli played second fiddle to RCB’s Gayle in most of the matches that year.
Number 11 belongs to Gautam Gambhir again, who is making his third appearance in this series. Gambhir, who was India’s leading run-getter in 2008 reached the top again in 2012. He scored an impressive 590 runs that season; 21 more than the second best Indian, Shikhar Dhawan. Gambhir scored 6 brilliant fifties in that period, 1 less than Gayle’s 7.

Number 9 also sees KL Rahul, who has scored 616 runs in the 2022 campaign. This was KL Rahul’s fifth consecutive year of scoring 500+ runs in an IPL season, making him the only player in IPL history to achieve such a feat. Rahul’s 616 runs were 129 more than the second highest Indian, Hardik Pandya.

That year, KL scored 132 runs in the innings; the highest ranked Indian player in the IPL.
At number 3, we have Rishabh Pant, who was an invincible beast in IPL 2018. Pant scored an amazing 684 runs in 14 innings; that equates to an average of 49 per innings. This is when he hits a maximum of 4 or less. Pant’s impressive achievements have been an average of 52.6 and a strike rate of 173.6 with eight 40+ scores in the series.

The number 1 in the list is none other than the G.O.AT.T Virat Kohli, who scored 973 runs in the 2016 edition of IPL.
