“Both teams (RPS and Lions) will not be granted an overtime. The contract was only concluded for two years. Even if we made it a 10-team league, two new teams would have to be freshly signed, so they (RPS and GL) wouldn’t get extra time or anything like that,” Shukla told media today. The overall sentiment of the IPL Board of Directors is to stick with eight teams as a ten team league would bring the number of games to 84.
“Next year, as ordered by the SC, the two (suspended) teams will be back. The question is whether 8 or 10 teams will show up for the IPL GC meeting. So far the plan is to continue with 8 teams. – The team league must be approved by the Governing Council.
All players were supposed to return to the auction pool after a 10-year cycle, but Shukla hinted that a retention policy could still be considered. “We will have a mega auction, but we also have to decide on the retention policy. The mega auction will not take place immediately, but shortly before the next IPL, giving us enough time to make a decision.”
It was also learned that the media rights of the IPL (broadcast/digital/mobile) are now granted for five years instead of ten years. “There was an assessment that we shouldn’t go for a 10-year period. After 5 years we don’t know what the quantum league would look like? How big would the league be? The COA agreed to everything. Shukla said Vivo’s title sponsorship deal will expire after the 2017 season and will go under the hammer again with just one change: the title sponsorship will be via an e-auction. “The topic (e-auction) was discussed. IPL staff were asked to speak to experts. Since it is a separate tender (digital/broadcast/mobile) for different zones, it becomes difficult.
