After the successful conclusion of the Women T20 Challenge 2022, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to expand the tournament. If reports are to be believed, the Indian cricket board is eyeing a window to hold a full-fledged women’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

When And How A Women’s Ipl Team Owner Will Make A Profit

“It was a meeting during the IPL final. There are two windows to get the green signal, one in March/April and the second in September/October. We will also contact the ICC for a separate window. BCCI may start the men’s IPL in May next year,” a source was quoted as saying by ANI.

The concept of women’s IPL is something that has gained the support of several cricketers these days. Harmanpreet Kaur, Ben Stokes, Punam Raut, Smriti Mandhana and Heather Knight among others extended their support to the idea.

Although a full-fledged women’s IPL has yet to become a reality, the Women’s T20 Challenge has been organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with the men’s IPL. It is the closest thing Indian Cricket has to IPL so far.

The first Women’s T20 Challenge was held in 2018 with a unique encounter between the IPL Trailblazers and the IPL Supernovas. Both teams had players from India and abroad. The game featured international stars such as Suzie Bates, Alyssa Healy, Danielle Wyatt and Beth Mooney. The Supernovas won the match defeating the Trailblazers by three wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In 2019, this competition was expanded with the addition of a team called Velocity. This title was also won by the Supernovas, defeating Velocity by 4 wickets in the final. In 2020, the Trailblazers won their inaugural title by defeating the Supernovas by 16 runs in the final.

In the recently concluded edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge, the Supernovas clinched their third title by defeating Velocity in the final held at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

After all, the women saw the occasion as the beginning of a new dawn where they too could call themselves millionaires like their male counterparts in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

There has been talk of a women’s T20 league in India for some time, with several veterans like Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur, among others, eyeing this pivotal moment in the country’s cricket landscape.

Viacom18 Bags Media Rights For Women’s Ipl For 951 Crores

But all that will change on March 4 this year when the opening game of the five-franchise tournament begins.

While it will most likely continue to be the precursor to the ‘big event’, the IPL, women cricketers will finally have a niche window to call their own in a crowded environment of men’s T20 leagues.

While in terms of money and clout, the WPL and IPL will never be comparable, the new kid in Indian cricket will at least add a lot of glamor to women’s cricket, which was lacking till now, and also bring in hordes of fresh Indians. and foreign faces, hoping to make a lot of money through the WPL.

As India’s women cricketers stepped into hitherto uncharted territory, it would be fair to say that the auction exceeded the expectations of many of them if we compare it to the IPL.

Viacom18 Secures Women’s Ipl Media Rights, Boosting Women’s Cricket In India

Mandhana received Rs 3.40 crore, spinner Deepti Sharma was bought by UP Warriorz for Rs 2.60 crore and Jemimah Rodrigues and India’s new opener Shafali Verma won offers of more than Rs 2 crore certainly bodes well for women cricketers in the country considering the salary cap for each franchise was just five franchises which compared to last year’s Rs. where the total budget per franchise increased from 90 million to 95 million.

Comparing the inaugural WPL auction to the first IPL auction before the 2008 season, there is only a three-fold difference between what CSK paid for Mahandra Singh Dhoni (Rs 9.5 crore) and what Mandhana received on Monday.

In fact, during the 2010 IPL auction, Shane Bond (KKR) and Kieron Pollard (MI) were the top earners at Rs 4.8 crore each. It was only in 2011 that the wage bill of the franchises started to rise and Gautam Gambhir (KKR) turned heads to earn 14.9 crores.

Over the years, IPL has become the biggest and best domestic T20 tournament in the world due to manifold increase in television, streaming and online revenue which has also translated into huge monetary earnings for the players.
